This month, LA County Library is excited to announce a series of events and resources in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities. This special observance pays tribute to the generations of AA and NHPI people who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success.

“This month-long celebration is an opportunity to recognize the contributions and celebrate the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders through various activities and learning experiences,” said LA County Library Director Skye Patrick. “We encourage everyone to participate in these events and activities to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the diverse communities that make up LA County.”

HIGHLIGHTED EVENTS:

Trailblazers in Conversation with Travis Yee on May 2 from 6-7 pm on Zoom:
LA County Library Director Skye Patrick and Asian American country music sensation, Travis Yee, will have a thoughtful conversation about Asian American identity and representation in mainstream media and music. Travis Yee is a Nashville native who captured a large following with his distinctive singing and song writing style. He was featured on Fox’s I Can See Your Voice, Season 1 and his first three singles include “Everything, But Country”, “Eyes Like Mine”, and “She’s Changing.” This event is ideal for adults interested in the intersection of culture and music.

Heart & Hand Virtual Book Talk with Vanessa Chan on May 23 from 6-7 pm on Zoom:
LA County Library Director Skye Patrick will chat with literary rising star, Vanessa Chan, author of the best-selling novel The Storm We Made. Chan will discuss her novel set in wartime Malaya (now Malaysia), which details an intriguing story of undercover operations, forbidden love, and enduring family ties. Chan’s work was recognized by Good Morning America, BBC, Radio 2, and The New York Times. This is a must-attend event for book lovers.
